The keyboard on your iPhone is probably one of the most important components of the device. Without it, it is pretty much impossible to use most of the apps and features on the device.
So, while we can’t begin to imagine the problems that a keyboard that is not working can cause, this is by no means and isolated problem. It happens more often than you think and for a variety of reasons. The solutions on this article, however will help you fix the problem once and for all.
Before we get to the solutions, we thought we’d outline some of the most common reasons why your keyboard may suddenly stop working. They include the following:
The app that you are trying to use the keyboard on may have crashed.
There is a software problem that is interfering with the keyboard.
Hardware issues such as an unresponsive display and touch screen features.
Since keyboard problems on iPhone can present in various different ways, we thought we’d address each problem individually. The following are the most common and their solutions:
A hard reset or a forced restart is perhaps the best solution when the keyboard on your iPhone is frozen.
If you can turn off your iPhone normally, press and hold the Power button until the “Slide to Power Off” option appears on the screen. Drag it to the right to restart the iPhone. But if you are unable to restart the iPhone the normal way, press and hold the Power and the Home button at the same time until the Apple Logo appears on the screen.
For the iPhone 7 and 7 plus, press and hold the Power and the Volume Down buttons for at least 10 seconds or until the Apple Logo appears. Release the buttons and the iPhone will restart.
For iPhone 8, X and earlier models, press and release the Volume Up button, press and release the Volume Down button and then press and hold the Power button until you see the Apple Logo.
If you find that the keyboard is working, but is relatively slower than you’re used to, here’s what you can do:
Step 1: Open the Settings on iPhone.
Step 2: Tap “General” and then scroll down to select “Reset”.
Step 3: Select “Reset Keyboard Dictionary” and enter your passcode when prompted.
If you are able to use the keyboard, but it is not making the typing sounds that you are used to, there are several things to check.
Begin by making sure that the mute switch is not activated. This can not only mute the ringer, but it may also mute the keyboard typing sounds.
If the mute button is not the problem, go to Settings < Sounds and then scroll to select “Keyboard Clicks” to make sure that it is turned on. If it is on, and you still don’t hear the typing noises, then there may be a problem with the iOS software.
If the problem is that your keyboard shortcuts are not working properly, the first thing you should do is to delete the shortcut and try to create it again. You can also simply add a new shortcut to the existing one to see if this will jumpstart the shortcuts.
If that doesn’t work go to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary to reset the whole dictionary.
Since it is also possible that this could be an iCloud issue, go to Settings > iCloud > Documents & Data and make sure that “Turn off Documents & Data” is turned on before checking if the shortcuts are working again.
The prediction feature in keyboard known as QuickType was introduced with iOS 8 to predict the word you want to type into your keyboard and essentially type it out for you.
But sometimes, QuickType can disappear for no apparent reason. In this case, just swipe up from the small tab right above the keyboard to re-enable QuickType and get your predictions back.
Some people have also reported that the keyboard simply won’t popup when they need to type something. The best way to fix this particular problem is to restart the iPhone. Just press the power button until the device powers down, wait a few seconds to reboot it.
If a restart doesn’t work, then you may need to connect the device to your computer and restore it in iTunes. This will remove all data and settings, giving your device fresh start.
The following are some of the other general fixes that you can try when your iPhone keyboard is not working:
The iPhone’s keyboard can also malfunction if there is some dirt or debris stuck on the screen. Perhaps you used your iPhone while eating and some of the food bits got stuck on the screen, tricking your device into thinking that you are tapping the screen.
If you suspect that this is what is to blame, the solution is very simple; just use a microfiber cloth to wipe down the iPhone’s screen where the keyboard appears. If the dirt sticking to the device is too compact, then you can use screen cleaning liquid in addition to the cloth. Never use window cleaners, aerosol sprays, abrasives, household cleaners, ammonia or any other solvents that may contain acetone or hydrogen peroxide. Try to find a screen cleaning solution that doesn’t contain these ingredients. One of the best is GreatShield Touch Screen Cleaning Kit.
If you notice that the keyboard problems only appear when you are using a certain app, it is a good idea to uninstall the app in question and then reinstall it.
Sometimes, a certain app can affect the function of the keyboard, leading you to think that the keyboard is the problem when it is really the app that is problematic. Uninstalling and then reinstalling the app should fix the issue.
The Reachability feature on your iPhone is meant to make it easy for you to use your iPhone with a single hand since all you need to do is to bring up everything you need on the screen is double-press the Home button.
But it has been known to cause keyboard issues, so if you have enabled it, you might want to turn it off. To do that, go to Settings > General > Accessibility and then toggle the switch next to “Reachability” to turn it off.
If the iPhone keypad problems persist even after trying all the solutions above, then you can try to fix the iOS system using an iOS system recovery tool like LazePaw iOS System Recovery.
